Jody Watley Brings 'Nightlife' To DC
Shortly after 8, the one and only Jody Watley took the stage of the historic Howard Theater on the arms of her dancers treating the enthusiastic DC audience to her current single, "Nightlife."
For nearly an hour and a half, Watley worked the stage, taking the crowd on a musical journey covering all areas of her impressive career and kept the audience-which consisted of gay, straight, black, white, young and old alike-on their feet, turning The Howard into a hot, energetic dance floor.
After welcoming the audience, Watley launched into another new song, "The Dawn," which was followed by a medley of Shalmar classics including "A Night To Remember" and "The Second Time Around," which had the crowd singing along as they took a trip down memory lane. A cover of Chic's "I Want Your Love" was met with applause as it seamlessly merged into 93's "Your Love Keeps Working On Me" and 91's "I Want You."
Jody kept the energy going as she performed "Some Kind of Lover" which was followed by one of her biggest chart toppers, "Looking For a New Love." For "Friends," signature fan moves were incorporated into the choreography while Watley tackled the hit's rap part with ease. She slowed things down a bit with "When a Man Loves a Woman", a single from her fourth album, "Intimacy", and talked about how when the song was released, radio was afraid to play it because of certain lyrics. It's always refreshing when an artist takes a stance and doesn't shy away from making statements with their music.
A re-imagined version of "Most of All" was up next which turned the uptempo '88 hit into a smooth ballad complete with guitar solo. Watley then turned up the energy with "I'm The One You Need" and got her sultry groove on with "Saturday Night Experience". She took time out during the song to pose for photos and encouraged fans to post them on her FB, Twitter and Instagram. One thing is certain watching Jody in concert is the love she has for her fans. Shaking hands, giving shout outs, handing out ear rings and folding fans-she knows how to make them feel special and appreciated for their support.
Closing out the night was "Still a Thrill", which gave Watley the chance to introduce her band members and dancers before bringing the party to a close with "Real Love".
